Frederick “Fred” Earl Hickman, 77, of Brownsburg, and formerly of Terre Haute, passed on to be with our Lord on Monday, Aug. 29, 2016, after a year long battle with several illnesses in Indianapolis. He was born Sept. 23, 1938 in Austin, Ind., to Rupert and Cecelia (Miles) Hickman, both whom preceded him in death; as well as two infant daughters, Karen and Myra; and brother Gary Kempf.
Fred is survived by his loving wife of nearly 45 years, Jean (Coyne); daughter, Robin (Gaskins) King of Brownsburg; sons, Don Luken and Kent Luken, both of Deland, Fla.; brother, Don (Julia) Hickman of Rosedale; sisters, Karen Sexton of Santa Fe, N.M., and Myra Hickman of Clearwater, Fla.; granddaughters, Piper King and Brandi Luken; great-granddaughter, Katlen Luken; and a nephew and several nieces.
In 1957 Fred graduated from Perrysville (Indiana) High School and joined the U..S Army Reserves. He received an honorable medical discharge and then attended printing school at University of Missouri. Fred began his career as a newspaper linotype operator and traveled for 15 years, working in the printing industry in various states across the country. In the late 1970s, Fred moved into the sales industry, focusing on advertising and then later auto and RV sales.
Fred loved cars, drag racing, cooking, gardening and lawn work, 50’s music, and travel. A few of his favorite places were the northeastern states and the western desert states. He also grew especially fond of spending time with his “Peanut” Piper King and thoroughly enjoyed being “Pop” to his granddaughter.
A graveside memorial service honoring Fred will be at Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel in Terre Haute on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 10 a.m. A life celebration will take place at Krietenstein American Legion Post 104 in Terre Haute on Sunday, Sept. 18, 2016, from 1 to 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, his family requests donations be sent in memory of Frederick Hickman to the Sisters of Providence, Mission Advancement, 1 Sisters of Providence, Saint-Mary-of-the-Woods, IN 47876.
